Description
These Corinthian sandstone columns were originally part of the east central portico of the United States Capitol. The columns were in place for presidential inaugurations from 1829 through 1957. They were dismantled in 1958 to make way for the east front extension of the Capitol. Twenty two of the original 24 columns were installed at The United States National Arboretum. The project was completed and dedicated in 1990.
